The love we found and enjoyed this last 18 months is only found in the Mission field. A very pure, unconditional, and open feeling of love that radiates from the people with pure, unconditional faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Brothers and Sisters in Christ, children of God, we look different, but "all are alike unto Christ."

Somehow all the problems, difficulties, differences, they all seem to disappear as the time to depart approaches, and all the fun, all the tears, all the faith-promoting and heart-wrenching experiences come to the forefront of our minds. We can only hope our friends here will remember us, as we remember them. "When one door closes, another opens", but still, its hard to go. In a word, unforgettable.

The Trip Home

The airport in Taipai was so different, it was beautiful ! Merlyn helped so much with our electric bills for the missionary apartments. At first I thought maybe she didn't like us so much because we could not understand each other over the phone and she would be impatient with me, but we turned out to be friends.

These are the guards at the bank. The man on the left saved our lives one day. We were with the new couple the Jones, helping them get their accounts set up and we left the blue binder (with all the money in it) behind. I thought we had it because we had a blue binder, but it turns out it was Sister Jones' and the money binder was left at the bank, for hours. This guard saw what had happened and when we walked up he had a big smile on his face. He had put it in his drawer for me. This is truly amazing because he is so poor and his little girl has cancer and they were just starting the treatments. So next time we went we took brownies, brownies make every thing better.

Across from the bank is the Reflexology Spa and for $8 you could sit in a recliner and get you feet soaked and worked on for 30 min. Sister Kimberlin made it for this training day for the District Presidents and their wives. It got some strange looks, kind of how we feel when we look at some of their food. Most gave it a try, some did not. Some really liked it and wanted the recipe. They are large, look kind of like they have little dog faces and their wings look like soft brown leather. It was a fascinating visit. Greg has a tailoring shop, where you can get a suit or pants made. Sister Kimberlin has had several blouses made in his shop.

This is a water filter we use here and we are so glad we have it ! They are having a new experience, getting their drivers license in the Philippines, when you are new it is classified as an "experience" They were troopers, it is very hot and takes a long time, most things look a little strange at first.

The lady in pink is Merlyn, it is her happy birthday, we took her a cake and hat. She works in Olongapo and helps Sister Kimberlin with the electric bills for some of the apartments. By helping that means she doesn't have to stand in line forever.

This is Elder Agacer, he is going home on the day this picture was taken. He is the only one that loves Eddie as much as Sister Kimberlin. He lived next door to us and when he would come up the stairs he would yell, E D D I E, any time of the night or day.

This weekend we did training in Alaminos, it is north about 31/2 hours. We feel it is the best district. They had a family history center that was unbelievable, it functioned and is busy, they do New Family Search and it was impressive, the system they have going. We did training in other areas then we, with the President and his wife and the other Senior couple, the Snow's, went to a great restaurant right by the ocean and had the biggest shrimp we have ever seen , they were very good! Wish we had taken a picture.

We had a good experience a week ago. We have some good friends, Bert and Rayola Sorensen, they served in Iba in about 1992. When we attended the District Conference in Iba, we started asking people if they remembered the Sorensen's. Everyone old enough remembered them with very kind and loving words. The three Brother's above remember them really well and the sister standing with Sister Kimberlin was the lady that help them in their home. We are standing in front of the house they lived in. The Sister said everyone cried and cried when they left. The members sometimes come to Conference in Jeepney's like the one in the picture, some have to come quite a distance.

Pictures of Interest

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0CSCS-Llvdk/SLp_aWe7J0I/AAAAAAAAALY/2YvkyIcN1nU/s320/101_4628.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5240641207087605570" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_0CSCS-Llvdk/SLp_auzAxJI/AAAAAAAAALg/noq_EVYbXws/s320/101_4629.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5240641213614310546" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0CSCS-Llvdk/SLp_ar6Bn9I/AAAAAAAAALo/wGVYRPdF1DU/s320/101_4631.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5240641212838420434" />

This is a great family history story.Sister Kimberlin has been helping the Catalogo's do their family history this year. Bro. Catalogo (white t-shirt) had lost track of his family.His father died and his mother went to another country to work, someone else raised he and his brother. Over here it is not unusual for people to lose contact, most do not travel much. So he remembered he had an aunt who lived and hour and a half away, which to him was like clear across the US. So one day Elder Kimberlin was going to go move some Elders down south and the Catalogo's went with him and they stopped where he thought his aunt lived and found his step father and 3 sisters,one of the sisters had looked for him in 2002 and couldn't find him, so she was crying and crying she was so happy. They gave him his Mother's phone number and he made contact with her again, she is still living abroad. He was so happy !! In Dec. they are going to have a family reunion and his mother is coming home, he has not seen her for 21 years. How's that for a family history story!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0CSCS-Llvdk/SLp4k7Tu6qI/AAAAAAAAALI/WI5xD-YLmNM/s320/101_4565.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5240633692190075554" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0CSCS-Llvdk/SLp4lDFIBvI/AAAAAAAAALQ/qnj3XWeT9lc/s320/101_4550.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5240633694276290290" />
This is a picture of the ladies at Enrichment meeting. They are learning to bake cookies in their toaster ovens. Most families have a toaster oven but no stoves with ovens. They really want to learn to bake, there seems to be a big interest in American food. We had a good time that day, and you can make oatmeal cookies in a toaster oven. Next I think we might learn to make taffy. In the second picture the Sisters are learning to bake pies in our apartment.

New Mission President

The first of July we received a new Mission President, President Aquino. Great battles, campaigns, victories or losses are celebrated with a day long fest in Balanga, Bataan, and the Bataan Death March parade is the main event. The organizers have acquired replicated uniforms, both GI and Japanese, with authentic Filipino garb, and they paint blood, wrap wounds, everything for realism, then they march in a parade, complete with floats depicting battles in progress, with the Bataan Death March as the finale, complete with uprisings, riots, and punishments. They especially appreciate the American and Canadian Missionaries, for the realism, they are fed before and after the parade, all the makeup and uniforms are provided. It is held in April as was the actual march, and even with all the festivities, you can still feel at least a bit of the pain felt by the real POWs, as they made their way in the heat of summer. But if you've read the history, it doesn't take much imagination to remember the actual brutality.

Corregidor Island

This was the day we went to Corregidor, the island off Mariveles, Bataan. Its where the US had built what they thought would be a saving place for troops forced out by the Japanese. But the bombing of Pearl Harbor stopped the Navy from forming any rescue. We went over in three of these boats. The trip took about half hour. Pictured is the group that made the trip, its Pday for the Missionaries, so they got to go. That's Sister Bulanon modeling Pday attire. There is a lot to see of the history, like this memorial. The tunnel that MacArthur holed up in is still there, and a tour takes you through it, complete with sound effects of the bombing outside. The large bombed-out building is a barracks built for the troops.This is one of the big guns of Corregidor, it could lob shells clear to Mariveles, but couldn't help do anything about the Death March, for fear of killing POWs, both American and Filipino.

New Calling

If you speak in Conference here they give you a flower to were, all most makes it worth it. He was a great guy ! After our meeting we all went and had pizza , we all , meaning the couples. Elder Teh is what we in the church call a General Authority, a member of the 1st quorum of the 70's. At dinner we asked what the difference was in the 1st quorum and the 2nd quorum ? He said if you are called to the 1st quorum, it is a call that lasts until you are seventy years old, and the 2nd quorum is a 3 year call. He told us about his call and how he felt, it was great. He is such a nice person, and dinner was a fun time, kind of like if you had just played a softball game and you all went out for pizza and just talked about everything, he was just one of the players,only he is a really good player.

Back to The Hard Pioneer Days

We had no idea that people still had coal burning irons. Brother and Sister Catalogo. Bro. Catalogo takes care of the whole compound here, he fixes everything, and he always has the smile. Sis. Catalogo is very shy, she cleans our apartment and washes our clothes and I hope she is coming with us when we come home,because I have never seen everything so clean.They have three daughters and one granddaughter. They are very faithful people and add a lot of strength to the branch.

This is Elder Kimberlin's News Years Eve toy, the shorter guy in the picture, Rommel, made it for him. It's a sulibong. Cans taped together, with holes in the cans, then you put alcohol in one end and light it. It makes a bomb like sound and blue flame shoots out the end. Great, New Years Eve toy ! On the spiritual side of the story about Rommel and his family, we love visiting them and getting to know them. They come to church every Sunday and Rommel now passes the sacrament, it always makes us think of Austin and Weston doing the same thing in Utah each Sunday.
Next blog I am going to tell you about "NQR" It was taped to my office door when I arrived, I'm not sure how long it has been here, maybe years. It's what we refer to when things are not as we thought they should be or different from what we are use to, we meaning Americans. It stands for " Not Quite Right"

The Work Goes On

Time is flying here, we do stay busy. We had 16 Missionaries return home last month, and only got 5 to replace them. We did get a new Couple, the Snows from Virginia. More work with less people, that causes all of us to step up the pace a bit.

We got to do some travelling, down towards Bataan. There are monuments built to honor those who were victims of that terrible time, along with milepost markers built where the highway and the sites of the march coincide.

It also seemed to be a time for snakes, Elder Kimberlin heard something behind him on one of his early morning walks, looked back and saw a 4 foot snake hastily slithering where he had just stepped, maybe a foot and a half away. And, needless to say, Elder Kimberlin did some hasty maneuvering of his own, putting some distance between him and it. Several days later, he found the carcass of what appeared to be the same snake in the same location, so he feels a little braver now.(Like maybe that was the only snake in the Philippines!)

As the seasons change, rainy season is about over and we're entering into the nicest part of the year, different fruits and vegetables appear in the markets. Mangoes and pineapples are about gone, palmellos(looks like a huge grapefruit, but a little sweeter) are here. And the bananas continue to appear. Everything is for sale here, snakes, lizards, crabs, you name it, they have it.

The farmers spread their rice crop out on the highway to dry, then as the clouds appear, they hurriedly gather it into bags. Traffic tries to avoid running over the rice, but sometimes it can't be helped.

And when Americans start looking toward fall(in September), here Christmas music begins to be heard in all the markets and stores. Christmas decorations appear everywhere for sale(there's no Thanksgiving here), with some Halloween masks thrown in for good measure. Halloween is celebrated in conjunction with All Saints Day(Nov.1). The cemetaries are all cleaned up, and people go to visit the gravesites of those who have gone on. Kind of like our Memorial Day, but much more celebrated.

But the good work goes on, the Missionaries keep working, keep praying, keep blessing the lives of good people everywhere. Its so exciting to be with them and watch them, they are so dedicated to their purposes. But for all the work, the sweating, Elder Kimberlin keeps gaining weight.

Two Months Went By In A Hurry !

Two Months Went By In A Hurry ! Time is flying by and things are seeming more comfortable, even the traffic. We are learning our jobs, little by little. We are having success with the people in our branch and feel a part of it now. We have felt a few times when we have been led or directed and have had some good experiences.One Sunday when we picked up the Sister's that take us visiting, they had a treat for us ! It was Cassava, A root that looks like a white carrot, they slice it and cook it in coconut milk and brown sugar. It tasted really good.
It's been a sick month for us. Sister Kimberlin picked up the flu around the 3rd week in Aug. and was sick on her birthday. It was a Sunday so the Relief Society sisters wrote on her birthday card they had for her, notes of get well. One Sister wrote ; The wind carry our voices telling you that there are Sisters sitting in an other corner of the world wishing you the best of everything , get well soonWe love you...Then Elder Kimberlin has his turn. It was just awful and lasted for ever.
Last week while in town doing our shopping for the week, it was time to eat dinner, so we picked a place we had not been to give it a try. It was a Japanese/Korean place. Brand new, very nice. We sat on the floor and our waiter grilled the meat on the table in front of us. Our waiter turned out to be an investigator . We were able to talk to him a lot because he was the one cooking the meat. He has a girlfriend and a one year old little boy ( no money to get married) He asked if he could ask us a question ? It was the one about how he had always been taught that God and Jesus were the same person. We had a good discussion.It just all makes me know that Heavenly Father really picked our restaurant that night and He is in charge.
Two couples go home tomorrow. Now there are just two couples left and the Mission President. We will get one new couple the end of Oct., until then it will just be hard.
We went on a trip up North a few weeks ago to One Hundred Island, it was beautiful.

Aug. 10, 2007

Tomorrow will be our forth Sunday. We thought we would put some pictures of the people we are working with in our branch. The San Narciso Branch is located 30 miles north of the mission home ,where we live.Sister Kimberlin is in charge of the primary and Elder Kimberlin has been the speaker for the youth. The branch President said he would have a Primary President called this week, the last one just quit coming.

Enrichment meeting was a very spiritual experience. There were five of us.

It was great those ladies just carried on like there were 50 Sisters there. Opening prayer, song( the song " As Sisters in Zion" was so touching and spiritual,we could hardly hold back the tears.) Special number by Elder Kimberlin ( on his new guitar) a personality game by the Pres. , then the demo by Grandma, on how to make cell phone carrier out of bamboo, which none of us could follow or ever do. About midway the RS Pres, disappeared for a while, came back with a dish called lupia, kind of like egg rolls.You have to understand that they are big into cooking and sharing, part of her opening, before the game was the sharing of a new recipe. So we are not supposed to eat their food but there are only 5 of us, I'm sure someone would notice if we didn't. The lupia was so good. The people do not have ovens so they cook on 2 burner hot plates.The last couple missionaries showed them how to make rice krispie treats, big hit. So I need some recipes for treats on a 2 burner strove. We got talking about how we don't know what to buy at the palenkes or markets outside. They took us downtown and helped us shop and told us what everything was, it was great. Grandma made me a purse and Elder Kimberlin a cell phone holder. Everyone here has a cell phone, they text, that's how they communicate.
Church was good the two families we visited came. That afternoon we had family home afternoon with them, Sister Kimberlin brought cookies and pickup sticks to play, it went well so we will see.

The hospital. No, the nightmare or the war zone would be more like it. It was worse than I would have ever imagined.Very few sheets, no clean sheets. Blood, filth, no nurses, no PJ's.Everyone crammed in a big room or hall ways. It was just terrible. Everything was old or rusted. If one of us gets hurt just take us to the airport and fly us out.

Our First Week

Our first week is over.We are not as tired as we were at first.Today at church during the prayer I know we both fell asleep.
Yesterday was our first day in the car. Kerry is very good at driving here, we are still not too good with the direction, yesterday while going to town we forgot the map, that was bad. The streets in Olongapo remind me of China Town, just big enough for two cars on the road, but three or four are trying to make it work. The little mall was a disappointment, very junky, crowded and loud. We went to the palenke. which is the city open market, very smelly with little children begging you for money. We bought some fruit and vegetables and left, but I know that is where the Sisters go to have their clothes made and to buy the things they need, so I guess we will be going back. I'm thinking maybe we can go to the smaller towns to their Palengke, maybe it would be better.Kerry did find a guitar shop ( our purpose for going and risking our lives) and he bought a very nice guitar.
Subic Bay is what they call, on the base ( although there is no base) there are gates and guards and no poor people. There is a grocery store with a little of our American stuff. President Burtenshaw was right " You can't always find what you want, but you can get what you need." American stuff is very expensive so if we can learn to eat like the Filipinos all will be well. The rice and vegetables and fruit seem to be very good so far. It's funny in the store because there are aisles and aisles of candy and junk food, I'm not sure what's up with that.
Our jobs in the office have been hard to try and learn this last week, I think particularly because we were so tired. We will try harder this next week. We don't want the Pres. to fire us because we like the air conditioning in our apartment and if we get shipped out it will be bad and really hot.
It is beautiful here especially in the mountains. In the little towns that are on the highway
it's hard to see the beauty because it is so poor and junky and sad. There are goats and water buffalo everywhere, and a million skinny dogs.
We went to church in our branch today. Nice building, very warm. We both got to speak today along with the Burtenshaws. We met some very nice people there. We had packed a lunch and knew we would be staying to go visit some of the people after Siesta time, which is from 12:00 to 2:00. So at noon we ate our lunch in the car and took a nap. Then at two the Relief Society Pres.and her first Councilor came and took us on visits. That was interesting. These two sisters were very sharp and spoke a lot of English, however in the homes we visited they did not speak much English, most of the visit was done in Tagalog , We understood some but not enough to help.Everyone lives in very poor homes, they have very little. Next week we will go back with these Sisters and have a family night on Sun. afternoon with a lot of the families we visited. Sat. afternoon is Enrichment meeting we will be learning to make cell phone cases out of bamboo or some thing like it, everyone has a cell phone.

This is Subic Bay.
